2013 겨울: 현재 가지고 있는 색소폰 마우스피스들

 

아무래도 색소폰 연습을 하고 사람들과 색소폰에 대한 얘기를 하다보니, 이래저래 연습만이 아닌 보다 쉬운 돈쓰는 일에 신경이 쓰인다.

골프 못치는 사람이 연습할 생각하기보다는 쉽게 드라이버만 바꾸면 골프가 잘 쳐질 것 같은 생각하는 것과 마찬가지 아닐까?

 

현재 내가 배우는 선생님은 개인적으로 빈티지 셀마 솔로이스트 E (vintage Selmer Soloist E)가 제일 좋다고 한다.

여기서 빈티지란 재즈 색소폰 중에서도 비밥시대를 전후한 1940대부터 50년과 60년대 늦게는 1970년대 것도 포함하는 것이라고 한다.

이때의 마우스피스는 현재처럼 공장에서 대량으로 제조하는 것이 아니라, 숙련된 제작자가 하나하나 수작업으로 만들었다고 한다.

물론, 이런 것을 흉내낸 현대의 마우스피스들도 많이 있다.

그런데, 왜 같은 소리를 내지 않는 것인지는 나는 아직 그런 소리의 차이도 모르고 빈티지 마우스피스도 가지지 않아서 잘 모른다.

 

일단 내가 현재 가지고 있는 마우스피스가 어떤 것인가를 객관적으로 알기 위해서 미국 악기점 싸이트에 들어가 사진과 개요를 베껴왔다.

이 마우스피스는 사오년 전에 동교동에서 프로에게 반년 정도 레슨받을 때 추천해줘서 당시 구입해서 연습하던 것이다.

지금 보니 이것이 바로 현재의 레슨 선생님이 선호하는 빈티지의 같은 회사에 의한 복각품이다.

소리가 너무 순한 것 같아서 재작년에 다시 색소폰 강습을 들으면서 바꾼 놈이다.

이것이 현재 내가 사용하고 있는 피스이다.

1999년에 미국 클리블랜드 근교의 멘터에서 애들을 데리고 살 때 현재 내가 가지고 있는 야마하의 색소폰을 구입했는데, 당시 악기 가게에서 이제 초급은 지나고 중급으로 접어들어간다는 뻥(?!)을 치고 추천받아 사온 마우스피스이다.

위의 셀마 솔로이스트와 생긴 것도 비슷하고 음색도 비슷한데, 아주 약간 강한 (edge) 소리의 특징이 있다.

쓰기도 편하고 음색도 마음에 들어서 현재 내가 사용하고 있다.

이건 아주 오래 전에 그러니 분명히 1999년 이전에 낙원상가에서 초급이 지났다고 추천해 달라고 해서 사온 쇠로된 마우스피스이다.

그런데 의외로 삑사리가 심하게 나서 (어제밤에 불어보니 삑사리도 않나고 아주 부드럽게 들림.^^) 서랍 깊이 간직해 두었던 마우스피스이다.

이건 아래의 야마하 앨토 색소폰을 구입할 때 같이 붙어온 마우스피스와 거의 같은 것이다.

실제 가지고 있는 마우스피스에는 4CM이라는 문자와 피스 위쪽에 Custom이라고 찍혀 있다.

아마도 당사의 제일 비싼 악기에 포함되는 것이니 더 좋은 재질과 좀 더 정확한 가공을 했을 것으로 추측된다.

한동안 혼자서 연습할 때 사용했지만, 위에서 언급한 레슨 프로가 셀머 쏠로이스트를 추천하면서 서랍에 넣어뒀다.

그리고 마우스피스들을 살펴보다가 이것을 주문했다가 현재 재고가 없어 백오더했다고 해서 취소했다.

현재 국내에서 수입상한테는 없어서 직접 미국에서 주문했는데. (tip opening #6)

빈티지 재즈의 소리가 난다고 한다.

한번 소리가 어떤지 불어보고 싶다.

과연 나에게서도 좋은 소리가 날 것인가???

국내에서 구할 수 있는 DV 마우스피스는 상대적으로 밝은 소리라고 한다.

그리고 빈티지 치고는 쎄지 않지만, 앨토 마으스피스의 기준같은 Meyer 5번 Medium 챔버를 색소폰나라 중고시장을 통해서 구했다.

집에 와서 불어보니 현재 사용하는 E. Rousseau의 Studio Jazz 보다 약간 소리가 굵고 부드럽고 에지가 없는 것 같다.

 

피스를 산 분이 여러 얘기를 해주는데, 혹시 가능하면 오토링크의 시그네춰 모델을 사용해보면 내가 좋아하는 소리일 것 같다고 추천해주었다

이건 아직도 가지고 있는 이제 14년이나 15년 된 야마하의 앨토 색소폰 중 가장 좋은 모델이다.

당시 클리블랜드 교외의 큰 악기상에서 셀머와 비교해서 두 악기의 소리를 들었는데, 내 귀에는 이 야마하의 소리가 차이나게 예쁘게 들렸다.

현재 Custom EX의 전 모델로 그냥 Custom이라고 씌어있고, YAS-875 (Ser. #) 009647 이다.

내가 잘 못 부는데도 이 악기를 불면 다른 사람들이 소리가 좋다고 하는 것을 보면, 악기가 좋기는 좋은가 보다 하고 있다.
