As I see it, there are four main giants in this conversation: SSB, Satphone, Iridium GO and Garmin Inreach.
SSB - main benefit free to use and fully intergrated with GMDSS. Main downside, expensive to set up and email / weather is on the complicated side. Cannot take to liferaft.
Satphone - expensive to run but nearly always available. Big plus is you can grab and take to your liferaft and dial the local coastguard. Bit more fiddly to handle email / weather than GO - and depending on your use more expensive.
Iridium GO - fairly pricy but with the new 'all you can eat' plans this is becoming the most popular choice for long disance cruising. Very slow connection but email and weather is usable. Not readily useful in a liferaft.
Inreach - in my opinion this is the best all round low cost solution. Very cheap compared to the others. Provides only texts and weather, but both are rock solid reliable and very cheap. Like a satphone has the advantage of being easy to grab and take to the liferaft.
Personally, if I was long term cruising I would have SSB *and* Inreach (on the cheapest plan) plus either satphone or GO. on my ill-fated trip last summer, I used both a satphone and Inreach to talk to MRCC but it was the Inreach which was invaluable.
I would *never* do another ocean passage without an Inreach - it was that good - the other options are nice to have on top of that.
