Hey YB,

We left off yesterday with you memorizing the pentatonic scale, and me telling you that we are going to add the most important ingredient in all of music to this.

The most important ingredient in music is RHYTHM.

(I'll explain why another time)

You are going to need a metronome for this lesson and just about all subsequent lessons with me.

In case you don't have one, I've provided an audio click track on the lesson page for you to use. This is really only a temporary solution since you cannot adjust the tempo of this track.

If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can (and should) get a very good quality metronome app for a few dollars.  There's a link to my favorite app on the lesson page.

There are also some free metronome apps out there.

I recommend plugging your phone or tablet into speakers so that you can hear the click over the sound of your saxophone playing.

Make it LOUD!

Over the years teaching, I have noticed that many students just don't follow my instructions when it comes to using a metronome.

These students all have terrible rhythm as a result.

Please, trust me on this. I'm not trying to make your life more difficult.

You MUST practice with a metronome period, end of story.

And I don't mean once in a while.

Always and forever.

It may be a bit of a challenge at first. This is normal. Stick with it and before too long it will be second nature and you will develop solid time.

Bad time is the worst sounding thing in music.

Practice with a metronome as I am going to show you in today's lesson and future lessons from this day forward, and you will sound much better and improve much faster.

I promise and guarantee you.

Now, I hope you did your homework from yesterday and have the major pentatonic scale memorized. Because in today's lesson, there are very limited visual references.

Remember, the name of this course is Play Sax by EAR.

Part 3 is coming to your inbox tomorrow same time...

P.S.

Later this week (12/31/2018), I'll be sending you a link for a special offer on the fullPentatonic Foundation Course, so keep an eye out for that.

Till then it's all about the rhythm,

Jay Metcalf
